FG Bans Importation of Packaged Tomato Paste
The federal government, though the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, yesterday banned the importation of tomato paste, powder or concentrate, and increased the tariff on importation of tomato concentrate among others from five to 50 per cent in order to revive the tomato sector.
According to operators, the value of imported tomato paste in Nigeria is about $170 million and $50 million spent on triple tomato concentrate.
In a document obtained yesterday from the Federal Ministry of Industry and trade and investment titled: ‘Implementation of the tomato sector policy’ which was signed by the Director, Industry Development of the ministry, Mr. Adewale Bakare, stated that such action would revive the sector, create jobs and preserve foreign exchange.
The document stated: “As you are aware, government has overtime engaged tomato industry stakeholders on ways to deepen the industry and particularly, encourage the use of locally produced tomato fruits across the value chain. It is in that regard that I am directed to bring to your notice the decision of the government towards boosting production and attracting investments into the tomato sector.
“These include ‘classification of greenhouse equipment as agricultural equipment to attract zero per cent import duty. Ban on the importation of tomato paste, powder or concentrate put up for retailing and others Ban on tomato prepared or preserved by vinegar or acetic acid and others.
“Increase in the tariff on the tomato concentrate and other concentrates (HS Code 2002.90.11.000) from five percent to 50 percent and additional levy of $1,500 per metric tons with the objective of increasing the current tariff from five percent to 50 percent (35percent +5 percent+10 percent) and an additional levy of US$1,500 metric ton. Restriction on the importation of tomato concentrates to the seaports to address abuse of ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation scheme (ETLS) and inclusion of tomato production and processing in the list of industries eligible for investment incentives administered by the Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC).”
It further stated that “It is expected that the foregoing measures which are situated within the overall road map for the development of the industry, will create jobs, save foreign exchange and create capacity for export of tomato concentrate and paste to ECOWAS sub –region and beyond.”

Here is another reason for Nigerian senators to be angry with Hameed Ali, a retired colonel, heading the Nigerian Customs Service as Comptroller-General.
The Compliance Task Force that Ali set up has just impounded 223 vehicles, 13 of which belong to a senator in Kano state.
The Task Force Zonal Commander, Mr Bala Dole, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Monday.
He said the vehicles, belonging to the unidentified senator were; 12 new Toyota Hilux and one Land Cruiser Jeep.
Dole, who declined to name the said Senator, said the 13 vehicles were trailed from Maigatari in Jigawa, following an intelligence report, indicating they were smuggled into Nigeria via land borders.
“Based on the intelligence report, the vehicles were 30 in number but we were able to trail 13 of them 12 of which were hidden in the senator’s compound.
“We sealed the house and retrieved the vehicles and they are now in our custody,” Dole said.
The identity of the senator will remain a guessing game for now.
There are three senators representing Kano State.
They are Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Kano central; Barau Jibrin, Kano North and Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, Kano South. All are representing the All Progressives Congress.
The task force also said that it seized other items, including foodstuff worth N269.5 million in Kano and Jigawa states within eight months.
The items included 9,757 bags of rice, 2,916 of foreign supergetti, 2,770 cartons of foreign vegetable oil and 999 cartons of macaroni.
He said others were; 889 veils of second hand clothes, 50 used school bags, 110 cartons of new foreign shoes, 956 bags of mosquito coil and six fairly used cars.
“The total value of the seizure made by the task force since it was established in July 2016, excluding the 13 Senator’s vehicles, is N269.5 million.
“We are yet to determine the cost of the 13 vehicles belonging to the Senator“.

On a night filled with Technical Knockouts (TKOs), Lagos based youngster and fast growing pugilist Rilwan “Babyface’’ Babatunde emerged the Most Valuable Boxer of the GOtv Boxing Night 11, held at the Obafemi Awolowo stadium, Ibadan on Sunday, March 26.
The sensational boxer won the N2m prize money after he defeated Waliu ‘Oganla’ Arogundade in the fourth round to win the national light welterweight contest in a total of 10 minutes.
Babyface pummeled his opponent heavily and floored him twice before the officials had to stop the bout.
ThisTrend can also report that Ibadan rave of the moment Akeem Sadiku, popularly called “Dodo’’ also knocked out Saka “KC Confidence’’ Kazeem in the first round in the light middleweight contest.
In the national light welterweight bout, Vincent Essien was no match for Ibadan born Olaide Fijabi known as “Fijaborn’’ who is well known in Lagos.
Although their encounter was developing into a tough one when Essien showed some flashes, but Fijabi rounded it off in the third round with a deft punch to send Essien to the canvass - and that was how it ended.
The major upset of the night was observed in the national light heavyweight challenge between Kabiru “KB Godson’’ Towolawi and Adewale “Masevex’’ Masebinu.
KB Godson’s heavy blow in the second round was enough to win the tie as Masevex’ manager threw-in the towel after blood from his boxer’s face continued to spill.
The biggest bout on the fight-card was however short lived when Nigeria’s Otto “Joe Boy” Joseph wrapped-up the much anticipated West African lightweight challenge in the first round when he defeated Ghana’s Ayitey Mettle, to seal a night of explosive boxing.
Babyface who had never won the prize money at the previous editions of the tournament also took home the Mojisola Ogunsanya trophy, an award given to the best boxer on the night.

Dino's Certificate Scandal: NANS Frowns Against ABU-VC Summoning

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has frowned against the summoning of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibrahim Garba by the Nigerian Senate over the certificate scandal allegation levelled against Sen. Dino Melaye.
According to media reports, The Senate has summoned the Vice Chancellor of the aforementioned citadel of learning to appear before it Monday March 27, 2017 and explain his own side of the story.
Recall that Senator Dino (APC-Kogi West), has been embroiled in a certificate scandal after reports from Sahara Reporters indicated that although he attended ABU, but he did not graduate.
Reacting to the summon, the apex students condemns it in totality, calling on the Senate to “be responsible enough to give us dividends of democracy”.
“NANS frowns against the summoning of Prof. Ibrahim Garba, the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria (ABU). Rather than summoning the Vice-Chancellor, why not Dino Melaye provides his certificate and Senate takes it to the university for verification,” the President of NANS, Comr. Aruna Kadiri stated.
With this development, Kadiri explained that “it therefore means if 200 graduands have issue with certificate, the banks, ministries, multinationals and even a married man that doubts the authenticity of his wife's certificate will also summon the Vice-Chancellor to his house for questioning”.
The NANS President who frowned at the summon describing it “frivolities” noted that the country was enmeshed in enough economic troubles and needed to focus on remedies.
“The Nigerian Senate should be responsible enough to give us dividends of democracy. We say no to the summoning of the Vice-Chancellor for frivolities,” he added.

Reports Of Alleged Murder Of Man By Soldiers In Ikorodu Not True - Nigerian Army
Penulis YERO
Diterbitkan 4:33:00 PM

The Nigerian army has debunked reports of an alleged murder of one Mr. George by soldiers of 174 battalion in Ikorodu.
This was noted in a statement released on saturday by the director Army Public Relations army Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman.
It reads;
'The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to media reports and photograph of the corpse of one Mr. George of Ogijo, Ogun State, allegedly “murdered” by troops of 174 Battalion Ikorodu. The story and the photograph were ostensibly shared by one Mr. Kenny Abel Adesanya through his twitter handle. However, investigation have confirmed that the allegation is not true, rather it was figment of Mr. Adesanya’s imagination borne out of mischief, hatred for the Nigerian Army and attempt to divert attention from those that committed the dastardly act.
For the avoidance of doubt, the location where the incident took place, Ogijo, is in Ogun State and 174 Battalion does not have any deployment there, neither do any of our troops patrol the area.
To further buttress this fact, a team was despatched to Ogijo Divisional Police Station, Ogun State, to investigate the matter. It was confirmed that the incident dates back to 8th March 2017, one Mr. George (now late), was threatened by the son of his landlady that he will invite his soldier friends to come and beat him for failing to pay his rent which was long overdue. On the said day, the tenant was taken from the compound by three young men and beaten up. The case was reported to Ogijo police station. The parties involved were arrested and their statements taken.
Thereafter, the police wanted to charge the matter to court for which the tenant and the landlady opted for out of court settlement. The young men who carried out the beating were neither arrested nor their identity ascertained by the police. The police claimed the landlady son said he used his friends. The case was however treated as assault and discharged. No report was sent to the military authorities because no soldier was involved.
On 24th March 2017, the said tenant Mr. George died in his house and his corpse was taken to the frontage of the landlady who quickly reported to the Ogijo Police Station. She was arrested and the corpse was deposited at the mortuary. The son of the landlady who is currently at large, is being hunted by the police authority.
Consequently, we wish to call on Mr. Adesanya all other persons that shared the story and the media to understand that Mr. George was not murdered by any soldier, let alone those serving in 174 Battalion and should correct this erroneous impression. Additionally, Mr Adesanya should render an unreserved apology to 174 Battalion in particular and the Nigerian Army, over this false allegation, failure of which would attract legal action against him.
We would like to seize this opportunity to advise that the media and indeed people to always cross check their facts before publication, posting on the web or broadcast.
Thank you for your kind cooperation.

Ambode To Pump $60m Into Lekki Free Zone Project
Penulis YERO
Diterbitkan 4:25:00 PM
Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, yesterday, said about $60million would be pumped into the ongoing development of the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) within the next six months.
The governor, who spoke when he met with stakeholders at the Zone, assured that he remains committed to addressing the challenges and ensuring the project is actualised.
“I want to assure that our financial commitment to LFTZ will be improved in 2017, that is, we will accelerate to quickly clear our outstanding counterpart funding for the Zone.
“In essence, we expect that in the next six month, we should be having an investment of over $60 million. I believe that when we invest our share of the fund and China Africa Lekki Investment Limited (CALIL) does, it will bring a major development for the Zone,” he said.
The governor said that putting the fund at the Zone at a time when Nigeria was gradually easing its way out of recession would not only improve infrastructure and boost development, but will also help attract more investors to the Zone.
He said over $6billion has been invested in the LFTZ in the last few years, with Dangote Group providing a lion share of about $4billion.
Ambode said: “Over $6 billion has been invested in the Zone in the last few years with Dangote share in the lump sum at $4 billion and we have a land space of over 16,000 hectares of which, just a portion of it is activated.
“We are all aware of the investments by Dangote Group and the China Africa Lekki Investment Limited (CALIL), had done as it concerns the partnership they signed with the Lagos State Government. And this partnership made the company own 60 percent while Lagos owns 40 percent.”
Ambode also assured that work would commence on the Lekki Deep Sea Port next month, saying that it was also a critical infrastructure that would attract more investors into the Zone and ensure return on investment.
“With the ongoing construction of the seaport, airport and others, it is obvious that a single road isn’t sufficient for the Zone.
“It is now clear that we have to dualise the Lekki-Eleko Road beyond the Zone in order to withstand the influx of vehicle that will be making use of the road to access the Zone. With this, we will be able to sustain the investments in the area,” the governor said.
He expressed optimism that with the Lekki Deep Sea Port, Dangote Refinery and Lekki Airport coming on board, the Lagos East axis would witness massive economic turnaround within the next two years.

Combatant greetings to all stakeholders, cadres, and ideological leaders across the Nation.
Every accident is a notice that something is wrong with men, methods, or material — investigate — then act. ——circa
Today National Association of Nigeria Student, Ekiti Axis support the action of Ekiti State government against indiscriminate siting of petrol stations across the state.
We consider it sardonic and devilish for Petroleum marketers in Ekiti to site their petrol stations at residential areas and schools across the state most especially primary schools where the majority are the helpless infant.
We should not think because an accident hasn’t happened to you that it can’t happen. Prevention is therefore better than cure.
We should recall the fire outbreak in the state capital sometimes ago, which destroyed the businesses of innocent traders, now imagine if those shops were to be residential buildings or schools, no doubt it would have cleared the lives of many.
The National Association of Nigeria Student Ekiti Axis under the leadership of Com. Owolabi Temitayo frowns totally at this tactles, thoughtless and uncaring act as we believe the PMS marketers focuses more on their profit/pockets than the lives of individuals in the state.
The motive power of the “safety-first” movement is a realization of the fact that lives and limbs need not be sacrificed to any desired result or anyone’s selfish gain.
We therefore call on well meaning individuals and the lovers of our dear state, to join and condemn the incessant and indiscriminate siting of petrol stations across the state.
Ones again PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE
until man dies. Struggle continues…
